Five Star Safety Rating Program Lists 2012 Picks

If you’re in the market for a 2012 car, you might want to wait until the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) weighs in on safety. NHTSA has announced it will test 74 passenger vehicles in the 2012 model year as part of its five-star safety rating program. The list includes 42 passenger cars, 22 SUVs and crossovers, two minivans and eight pickup trucks.
NHTSA’s crash test program will provide consumer information covering 81 percent of all the 2012 passenger vehicles sold in the United States, the agency says on its website.
Among the family cars on the test list are the Buick Regal e-Assist, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Nissan Maxima, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Camry, Prius v, Volkswagen Passat and Volvo S60.
SUVs and crossovers on the test list include the Acura MDX, Dodge Durango and Journey, Ford Expedition and Explorer, Honda Pilot and CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento and Sportage, Subaru Outback and Toyota RAV4. And the two minivans to be tested are the Chrysler TownCountry and the Toyota Sienna.
NHTSA also provides recommendations on the new model year vehicles available with the most effective crash avoidance technologies. This year there is an abundance of safety upgrades, including 68 vehicles available with either lane departure warning (LDW) or forward collision warning (FCW) or both systems. And, of the 68, 12 have LDW, 18 are equipped with FCW and 38 vehicles have both technology systems.
